Pop sensations Alvin, Simon and Theodore end up in the care of Dave Seville’s twenty-something nephew Toby (Levi). The boys must put aside music superstardom to return to school, and are tasked with saving the school’s music program by winning the $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands. But the Chipmunks unexpectedly meet their match in three singing chipmunks known as The Chipettes -? Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette. Romantic and musical sparks are ignited when the Chipmunks and Chipettes square off.

With a meth-addict for a mother and a non-existent father, AMBER (17) doesn’t have much in this world, except for one thing…her music. Through circumstances beyond her control Amber ends up on the streets on Los Angeles. Navigating her way through the world of the homeless, Amber finds solace in a run-down music store where she meets an old-time blues musician, BILLY. Billy’s life has become outdated. Not needed. And unnecessary. Having lost his daughter many years ago, Billy unknowingly looks to heal some of his wounds by helping Amber. Living on the streets there is also a group of kids that perform music on the Long Beach Promenade for money. Amber finds herself being drawn to this group. She eventually starts to hang with these kids, using her musical abilities to pay her way. Over the course of a month, Amber finds that sometimes we can find acceptance in the most unexpected places. That sometimes things aren’t always so black and white because sometimes the pain we all carry within ourselves can make life so much more, Black and Blue.

The Bushes and the Bin Ladens battle on national television with dueling series aimed at boosting their popularity with the masses in this animated musical satire with a cast of characters that includes Osama Bin Laden, Mullah Omar and Jenna Bush. While Bin Laden waffles on format, the Bushes come up with a surefire winner: “The George and Jenna Comedy Hour,” where dancing crucifixes and patriotic hot pants are the order of the day.

Gilligan’s Island – Season 3 (DVD) (XviD)

Though Gilligan and his fellow castaways will remain forever marooned in syndication, the series’ network run actually did come to an end in 1967 after a three-year run and 98 episodes. The final 30–which for Gilligan fanatics, include many of the show’s best–are compiled in this three-disc set, along with input from creator Sherwood Schwartz. It’s not known if Schwartz knew that the series was headed for cancellation, but he and the writers definitely appear to pour on the steam in season 3 to produce some of the series’ most imaginative episodes, many of which break out of the island sets through dream sequences; these include the season kickoff, “Up at Bat” (after being bitten by a bat, Gilligan dreams of being a vampire); “Pass the Vegetables, Please” (the castaways gain extraordinary powers after eating radioactive produce); “The Producer: (Phil Silvers guests as a Hollywood director whom the castaways attempt to win over with a musical production of Hamlet); “The Invasion” (the discovery of a government briefcase leads to Gilligan dreaming about spy capers); “The Secret of Gilligan’s Island” (a stone table leads to a caveman dream), and so on. A cruise ship’s worth of engaging guest stars (Don Rickles, Rory Calhoun, Strother Martin) and amusing performances by the always-game cast make this final season a worthwhile addition to any Gilligan groupie’s collection. And doubling its value is commentary by Schwartz on “The Producer” (arguably, one of the best episodes of the entire series), and a featurette about the show’s impact on pop culture.

Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (1996)

Jazz in the Diamond District (2008)

Lindsey Christian s Jazz in the Diamond District, from a screenplay by Lindsey Christian and Sia Barnes, is based on a story by Erica Chamblee, with revisions by Erica Chamblee and Andre Strong. The collectivistic complexity of this film s credits amply reflect a project as experimental, innovative and improvisatory as this distinctively D.C.-ish saga of two sisters and the musical world in which they are absorbed but not entirely fulfilled. As starved as I was for audience footage in A Wink and a Smile, I was close to being overpowered by the contagious enthusiasm of crowds responding to the funky versions of hip-hop numbers played by the film s District Legend Band. As long as the music is playing, and the magical smile of Monique Cameron s Jasmine Jazz Morgan is lighting up the screen, the film is hitting on all cylinders. But when the off-stage narrative grinds its way to a mawkish conclusion, the relative inexperience of the filmmakers becomes more evident. As it is, the aforementioned Ms. Cameron, Ms. Chamblee as Jasmine s younger sister, Leah Morgan, and Andre Strong as stormy promoter and drug supplier Flight all make sparkling screen debuts. Wood Harris plays Gabriel Gabe Marx, the romantic lead for both sisters in turn, and Clifton Powell plays Blair Morgan, the physician father of Jasmine and Leah. The film was shot in the seldom-seen-onscreen African-American neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., which are still laboring under the opprobrium of having been designated as the nation s Murder Capital in the 1990s. And though there is no gang violence in the film, the widespread use of illegal drugs is made to seem conspicuously commonplace in the area s music scene. One is left free to surmise that the district s gun violence stems from the trafficking in such drugs. Yet the film does make a contribution to interracial understanding in this year of Obama by showing a highly segregated city as a livable middle-class venue in which career aspirations for its young people are far from unthinkable. Such community landmarks as Ben s Chili Bowl, the Atlas Performing Arts Center and the renowned Ellington School of the Arts are shown as the positive images of D.C. they are. In the end, the music, with its infectious energy, together with Ms. Cameron s onstage charisma makes Jazz in the Diamond District well worth seeing.

Streets of Fire (1984)

Walter Hill’s updated (1984), highly stylized take on biker movies still looks like a determinedly eccentric project that happens to work at times, but not at others. Michael Paré plays a biker who agrees to rescue his ex-girlfriend (a rocker played by Diane Lane) from kidnappers (led by Willem Dafoe). The ensuing battle against a nocturnal background of industrial blight, chrome, and loud music is like some fever dream of a Springsteen fan who listened to the song “Born to Run” far too often. The audacity of the film carries it a long way even after it becomes clear that Hill’s experiment is crumbling under its own weight. Dafoe, who looked even spookier back then than he does now, is memorable, as are Amy Madigan and Rick Moranis. Music is by Ry Cooder, with an appearance by the Blasters.
