17 Again (2009)

July 9, 2009 by Alexio Doblese

Zac Efron breaks free of his High School Musical legacy with 17 Again, leading a pack of fine comic actors in a body-switching comedy that freshens the genre with good ideas. Efron plays Mike, a high-school basketball star who blows a college scholarship in 1989 to marry his sweetheart. Cut to 2009, and late-30s Mike (Matthew Perry) is a sour guy passed over for a promotion and feeling estranged from that wife, Scarlett (Leslie Mann), and teen kids (Michelle Trachtenberg, Sterling Knight). Magical intervention causes Mike to turn 17 once more–albeit in the present–and tackle his failures with a fresh start. As the hot new kid in his children’s high school, Mike proves a better father to them as their peer than as a man, while Scarlett sees in him everything that attracted her to her husband two decades before. Writer Jason Filardi and director Burr Steers demonstrate an imaginative and supple wit in such half-expected scenes as Mike’s confrontations with a school bully and his unsuspecting daughter’s flirtations with him. But it’s Efron who carries some truly delicate moments and proves to be genuinely sympathetic when emotions get thick and heavy. Thomas Lennon is also entertaining as a wealthy Star Wars nerd who pretends to be Mike’s father, but his slightly excessive screen time suggests the filmmakers weren’t entirely sure Efron could do what needed to be done. If so, they were mistaken.

400 Years of the Telescope (2009)

August 5, 2009 by Alexio Doblese

A documentary following the history of the telescope from the days of Copernicus to recent findings from the Hubble Telescope; 400 Years of the Telescope opens in 17th century Florence, Italy, with Galileo training his spyglass on the heavens and discovering that Jupiter has four moons; Venus has phases like the Moon; and most shocking of all: the Earth is not the center of the universe. Beautifully photographed in 4K digital cinematography, the film is a visually stunning chronicle of the history of the telescope from the time of Galileo, its profound impact upon the science of astronomy, and how both shape the way we view ourselves in the midst of an infinite universe. The film features interviews with leading astrophysicists and ,sts from the world’s renowned universities and observatories, who explain concepts ranging from Galileo’s act of revealing the cosmos with a simple telescope, to the latest discoveries in space, including startling new ideas about life on other planets and dark energy ? a mysterious vacuum energy that is accelerating the expansion of the universe.

Adventureland (2009) (DVDSCR)

July 11, 2009 by Alexio Doblese
Filed under Action, Adventure, Comedy, Movies, War

Arriving with what prove to be outsized expectations for raucous humor on the basis of “Superbad,” Greg Mottola’s “Adventureland” unspools as a rather ordinary account of youthful summer misadventures that goes down easily thanks to a sparkly cast, more than 40 pop tunes that anchor the action in the late ’80s and characters who get high both on and off their jobs at a tacky amusement park. Thanks especially to the presence of leading lady Kristen Stewart in a role she filmed prior to “Twlight,” the pic should spin good returns for Miramax on its March 27 release.

Based on the experiences he had working at a Long Island amusement, Mottola cooks up a passable amount of mischief to occupy the late- teen/early-20s misfits who work as ride and game operators at Pittsburgh’s Adventureland in the summer of ’87. Writer-director’s evident stand-in is James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg of “The Squid and the Whale”), who’s forced to take any summer job he can get when his European trip is dashed and his autumn date with grad school at Columbia is jeopardized by his alcoholic father’s fall from grace at work.

For a Reagan-era pothead, James is a terribly serious, woefully earnest guy who offers up his SAT scores when applying for low-end summer positions. He also somehow has emerged from college still a virgin, but his saving grace as far as his Adventureland cohorts are concerned is that he’s always has some weed. This makes the days go by easier, and also fuels the night, which the gawky James surprises himself by chastely spending with the alluring but massively screwed up Em (Kristen Stewart), who works at the park only as a way or getting away from her father and unbearable new stepmother.

What James doesn’t know is that Em is having a clandestine affair with older local musician and handyman Mike Connell (Ryan Reynolds), to whom James sometimes confesses his amorous feelings for Em. Adding further to the equation is a flirty cupcake Lisa P. (Margarita Levieva), a known virgin-for-life who nonetheless encourages James’ attentions.

The set-up provides plenty of opportunity for crude humor, Mottola indulges with abundant involving puking, groin pinches, drunk and stoned behavior, and lax work habits. But his real interest is the navigation of dubious emotional and ethical straits by immature characters who make serious mistakes while trying to feel their way out of their unhappiness.

The filmmakers’ investment in James’ sudden loss of a safety net, Em’s justifiable distress at home, and brainy stoner Joel’s (Martin Starr) fury over a one-time date’s anti-Semitism is genuine as far as it goes, but little that happens here is particularly surprising, especially the occurrence of some virginity divestment at the end.

Rather off-putting at first with his furrowed-brow attitude, Eisenberg’s James becomes increasingly palatable as the summer progresses. Stewart impresses again with her steady, clear-eyed gaze and sense of self. Nice comic turns are put in by Starr as the Gogol-reading outcast and Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig as the goofball but dedicated park owners.

The film begins with a group of men preparing weapons for a fire fight. Among them, an argument sparks regarding whether or not a certain person will be at their destination, a local grocery store. Upon arrival, they find a group of people.

The guys from the car take over the store and appear to be looking for someone, and it seems one of them is “scanning” people by staring into their eyes. The cop who evaded the raiders, shoots one and calls for back up. He continues to elude the raiders for a few more seconds and shoots Spooky, the guy who was scanning everyone. The cop is shot and the dead are moved back to the freezers where one of the raiders shoot up the dead bodies.

The cleared hostages are sent out when the police arrive and the uncleared are all cordoned of in the back and forced to drink milk. The raiders then reveal that they are a group of scientist that are tracking an unknown contagion to this town and to the supermarket. Since Spooky is dead, they must use an alternate method to find out who is infected.

They take the first of the uncleared people, the boss of the store, and begin to ask questions. This is all to distract him from cutting one of his fingers. He protests and tries to escape showing them he has stolen money from the store. Meanwhile the hostages begin to plan an escape. As one of the hostages goes into the freezer to get a gun to escape he is killed by some person. Later, in the movie it is revealed that the person who killed the hostage is the king of the Aliens. And the rest of the story is how they get rid off him. In the near end they realize that the person they killed is not the king and the girl is the real one.

All Aspect Warfare (2009)

August 19, 2009 by Alexio Doblese

A critical planetside tactical strike mission gone horribly wrong.
Shot down. Stranded. Lost. Left for dead.
The only way off this rock is through a very powerful enemy.
What else could possibly go wrong?

?apart from that ticking thermo-nuclear planet killer our drop ship launched earlier.

The Terrans have been at war with the Gammulan race for years. In an attempt to change the tide of war and take the battle to the enemy, Galactic Command, the Terran military body, launched an all out attack on the Gammulan homeworlds.

Deployed in a distant hostile territory on the other side of the known galaxy, GALCOM forces were met with repeated defeat and unprecedented losses. GALCOM deployed another fleet along with a decoy, the GCV-Excalibur, carrying a devastating orbit to surface weapon. The R.A.N.D.O.M (Random Access Nuclear Destruction of Obsolete Matter) weapon, otherwise known as the ?planet killer?. A weapon which had only been used once before.

After an intense battle, a badly damaged GCV-Excalibur managed to slip through the Gammulan defenses and attempted to land on the nearby Gammulan planet of LV-115. Engaged by undetected planet based Surface To Orbit weaponry, the all but destroyed craft crash landed on the hostile planet. But not before deploying the devastating weapon.

Badly damaged, ninety percent crew loss and with the R.A.N.D.O.M weapon deployed and ticking, the intense planetside battles that ensue tell the story of a surviving group of four combat veterans stuck on a hostile planet, believed dead, hunted by the enemy and in a race against time to either locate and disarm the weapon or get off the planet before it detonates. Problem is, the only way off the planet is through an overwhelming enemy force.

Gameplay Highlights

* Six unique playable character classes with various strengths, weaknesses and restrictions.

Amiga Forever Plus Edition v2009

August 9, 2009 by Alexio Doblese

Release Information:
The Amiga computer, launched by Commodore in 1985, combined superior multimedia technology with ease of use, inspiring millions of the most creative and enthusiastic computer users ever.
Amiga Forever is the award-winning Amiga preservation, emulation and support package brought to you by Cloanto, Amiga developers since 1986.
Different editions of Amiga Forever blend high-quality software and original content with the ultimate set of videos to chronicle and let you experience firsthand the history, culture, challenges and passion behind the Amiga.
New features in Amiga Forever 2009:
All included games and demoscene productions are now in RP2 format (uses less disk space and makes it very easy to add or remove files)
RP2 Manager to scan for and import/export content
Built-in RetroPlatform Library (to recognize and configure games, etc.) with live updates
Seamless, one-click integration of AmiKit and AmigaSYS add-ons lets you experience a broader variety of Amiga perspectives*
New system ROMs (e.g. the 0.7 Kickstart required to run the software used by Andy Warhol in the 1985 Launch of Amiga demo)*
Improved documentation and help (new Tip of The Day balloon, new documentation in Windows Help format)
Emphasis on usability: interface and settings are improved, but remain consistent with the previous 2008 version and with C64 Forever (also see Tips for Upgraders)
Tested to comply with “Compatible with Windows 7″ requirements, with full support for Windows Vista and Windows 7, both x86 and x64 (possibly still the first and only Windows software with custom-shaped glass-enabled skin)
Additional Notes:
We decided to release this cool Commodore Amiga emulation tool, plus all it’s additional Games, Demoes and so on. Someone out there would perhaps say this should be released under the Application section, since it’s not directly a game, but more a tool.
In a way they’re right and we have seen previous Commodore Amiga editions get released that way, but then again it is a tool that emulates the Commodore Amiga machine, but yet it features a ton of games with it.

As proud Commodore Amiga owners, back when we were kids, then the nostalgic moments and good memories with the breadbox came in first line. Just to make us remember how much fun it was and to be honest, then some of the included games are way more fun, than a large deal of the games relased these days.
That’s why we choose to release this under the Games section

Angels & Demons is a 2009 American film adaptation of Dan Brown’s eponymous novel, released on May 15, 2009. It is the prequel to The Da Vinci Code, another Brown film adaptation, although the novel Angels & Demons was published and takes place before the novel The Da Vinci Code. Filming took place in Rome and the Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Tom Hanks reprises the lead role of Robert Langdon, while director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also returned.

==PlThe film starts with the shattering of the Pope’s Ring of the Fisherman and his funeral in the Vatican. It then switches to CERN, a scientific research facility in Geneva, where a research team is experimenting with the creation of antimatter. In this scene, a woman named Vittoria Vetra, a scientist in the research team, is introduced. Just moments after larger quantities of antimatter have been successfully created by the team, the research facility is compromised by an intruder dressed as a scientist who steals the antimatter after murdering one of the individuals guarding it, Vittoria’s research partner Silvano. Robert Langdon, a professor at Harvard University, is visited by a Vatican police official who tells him that someone has been making threats against the Vatican and has already kidnapped four cardinals – the four preferiti (Italian for “preferred”), who are the four favorites to succeed as Pope, before the papal conclave. The officer also tells Langdon that the kidnapper will begin executing the cardinals every hour starting at 8 p.m. that night. After Langdon arrives at the Vatican, the Vatican police show Langdon a video of the antimatter placed in an undetermined location through a video camera specifically shooting the object that is fed into a surveillance system. After the camerlengo, the personal chamberlain to the previous Pope, suggests the idea, the Swiss Guard decide to find the location of the antimatter by systematically shutting off sections of the city’s electrical grid and monitoring the surveillance camera to see if it shuts off corresponding to the city sections being shut off. If a section of the city’s power has been turned off and the camera also loses power, the theory holds that the camera is located in that section of the city. Langdon is also introduced to Vittoria. + When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati – the most powerful underground organization – + in history – he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. – Langdon at this point mentions the history between the Illuminati and the Vatican and the conflict that began between them in 1668

Angels and Demons (2009)

August 27, 2009 by Alexio Doblese
Filed under Action, Adventure, Movies, War

When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati – the most powerful underground organization in history – he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican’s only hope for survival.

Angels and Demons was the reclusive authors third novel after he gave up his job as an English teacher. It tells the story of Langdons brush with a shadowy secret society, the Illuminati, and his frantic quest for the worlds most powerful energy source, in the company of a beautiful Italian physicist whose father, a brilliant physicist, has been murdered.

The team behind the global phenomenon “The Da Vinci Code” returns for the highly anticipated “Angels & Demons,” based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard again directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.

The Terrans have been at war with the Gammulan race for years. In an attempt to change the tide of war and take the battle to the enemy the Terran military body, Galactic Command (GALCOM), has launched an all out attack on the Gammulan homeworlds.

The events that take place in Angle Of Attack occur during the final days of the air campaign of the assault on LV-115 – an important planet used by the Gammulans for military purposes and as a staging area for their assault on GALCOM forces.

The GALCOM forces, locked in a lopsided air campaign, made the decision to load the ‘planet killer’ R.A.N.D.O.M. weapon aboard the GCV-Excalibur for its ill-fated mission.
